Guide to nature and landscape photography locations in Ontario

Devil's Punchbowl, Stoney Creek

Spectacular, deep bowl; unremarkable waterfall

Photographic Potential:  ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆

Natural History Diversity: ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Landscape Features:  37m plunge-style waterfall (when there is water!), high cliffs, escarpment headlands, bedrock outcrops, forested canyon

Flora & Fauna:  Nothing remarkable as this area is well-worn from use

Location: On Ridge Road off Hamilton Road 20, Stoney Creek

Facilities: Parking Lot (paid), observation platform, viewpoint, wheelchair access

Access: Wide walking path; narrow, rugged and/or rocky trail down to base

Winter Access: Unknown: it's a short walk from parking, although parking lot may not be cleared of snow

Notes: The bowl of Devil’s Punchbowl is spectacular, as is the view of the forested gorge, but for much of the summer, there is little or no flow over the falls. The layers of sedimentary limestone and shale that make up the escarpment are clearly evident and quite colourful, but the ridge over which Stoney Creek flows is rather ugly with graffiti along the top.

Hazards & Precautions: None (unless you choose to go down to the base, which is very dangerous)
